What is the Fear of the Lord?

lord

Hello Friends,

I mentioned I was going to write something today about how God only wants good for us but I will have to hold off on that for a min. So today in my Bible study the question was  ‘what  are three ways that the fear of the Lord is evident in your life?’.

Well, I learned a while back that the fear of the Lord does not only mean to fear God like we think of when we think of the word fear but it is so much more than that. So in attempting to put together the words that I needed to answer this question I started digging.

After I started digging I thought well this may be a long one so I should write a post about the understanding …what is the fear of the Lord . So here we are…

I should note a bit before hand that I may share a few thoughts here and there but I am going to leave the deeper digging for you.  So here we go…

What is the Fear of the Lord?

I guess if you wanted the really simple answer you could find it here…

 Come, O children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
What man is there who desires life
and loves many days, that he may see good?

 Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking deceit.
Turn away from evil and do good;
    seek peace and pursue it.

Psalm 34:11-14

yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.

Proverbs 2:3-5

1. Fear of the Lord is Wisdom and Knowledge…

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!

Psalm 111:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.

Proverbs 15:33

And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”

Job 28:28

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:7

2. Fear of the Lord is Obedience…

If you will fear the Lord and serve him and obey his voice and not rebel against the commandment of theLord, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well.

1 Samuel 12:14

Now then, let the fear of the Lord be upon you. Be careful what you do, for there is no injustice with the Lord our God, or partiality or taking bribes.”

2 Chronicles 19:7

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.

Haggai 1:12

Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord

Colossians 3:22

3. Fear of the Lord is Hatred of Evil and putting off our old  nature…

The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.

Proverbs 8:13

To this day they do according to the former manner. They do not fear the Lord, and they do not follow the statutes or the rules or the law or the commandment that the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel.

2 Kings 17:34

4. Fear of the Lord is being in Awe of who God is and what He has done

Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!

Psalm 33:8

For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.”

Joshua 4:23-24

5. Fear of the Lord gives Life

The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.

Proverbs 14:27

The fear of the Lord prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short.

Proverbs 10:27

The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.

Proverbs 19:23

Also, I wanted to share some of the benefits/rewards of having the Fear of the Lord…

In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge.

Proverbs 14:26

The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.

Proverbs 22:4

By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil.

Proverbs 16:6

Now friends, this is NOT and all-inclusive list… it’s not a checklist… dig deeper

In fact, the Bible warns us and shows us that it is not just a checklist or a command. It must be lived from the inside out.

And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.”

And the Lord said:
“Because this people draw near with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
while their hearts are far from me,
and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
therefore, behold, I will again
do wonderful things with this people,
    with wonder upon wonder;
and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”

Isaiah 29:12-14

Finally, I want to share with you this gem but I will leave it for the Spirit to show you all the beauty found in these scriptures…

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide disputes by what his ears hear,

but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

Isaiah 11:1-5

As Always,

Be Blessed!
