It’s okay take a break

Hello Friends,

So as I posted yesterday that this post is connected to that one. It is actually what I was talking about when I said I saw and heard some things that got me thinking… you can check it out here if you haven’t read it.

So everywhere I look these days, there is always someone in my circle of people talking about or sharing articles about taking a break. Mind you, I am a homeschool mama, so most of these articles are about mamas telling you it’s ok to take a break.

Now that I think about it I don’t think I have seen many, if any, articles like that directed to men… hummm.. I digress.

Normally, I would dive in head first with these articles and agree 100%. Shoot, I even just got done doing a Bible study on the book of Ecclesiastes and that book is all about taking a break… right? .. right?

This time something caught my attention about these articles, conversations, and posts. Particularly, this verse came to mind…

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

2 Timothy 4:7

 And that got me thinking… (watch out 🙂 )

Race… He has finished the race…What do I know about a race…

*** Since this post was so long I split the post you can follow my thoughts here if you like, but for now I am going to skip that part. And focus in on #3***

“The conditioning time can be brutal, especially to those that are not in the best of shape. Achy muscles, Out of breath, the feeling like your heart is going to beat out of your chest if you go any further, so you take a break for fear of death. (hmmm…)”

Particularly the part…

“…so you take a break for fear of death.”

I recently talked a small bit about fear here with this verse…

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

2 Timothy 1:6-7

GOD DID NOT GIVE US A SPIRIT OF FEAR!!!! I cannot shout that loud enough!

I could go on and on about that, but that is for another time.

So the other part of that statement is …. “so you take a break.” Usually, when we take a break there is a cause… in that particular instance, it is because of fear. However, there are millions of reasons/excuses we have/make to take a break.

This got me thinking…

What is the cause behind all these breaks… so many suggestions to take a break…

What if…. who would want all these Christians to take a break…

GOT YA!!! that coward wants nothing more than Christians to relax, take it easy……don’t worry about the world; focus on yourself….It’s okay take a break. YOU deserve it.

Man, if there ever was a roaring lion…. You’d think you would hear it right?… Have we become so immersed in this world that we cannot recognize the sound of that roaring lion?

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:8

Now some may say… wait, wait….. what about Ecclesiastes? Your life is but a vapor so enjoy life…right?

 Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.

Let your garments be always white. Let not oil be lacking on your head

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 9:7-9

Where does it say rest? Where does it say take a break? Is God’s definition of rest the same as the worlds?

For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.”

And again in this passage he said, “They shall not enter my rest.”

Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day,

“Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,  for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

Hebrews 4:4-11

All too often, myself included, we associate taking a break with resting. It’s funny. Even as God was showing this to me, I checked one of my favorite scriptures about the seasons of life…surely it says it in there…

 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
 a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Nowhere does it say to rest. Nowhere does it say to take a break. I guess we could interpret some of these times as taking a break if we were really pushing it…peace..laugh…dance… And if we wanted to try and squeeze it, we could say, “Well it does say everything.”

But really if we are being honest with ourselves, think of the last time/thing we took a break from … What caused us to take a break from it? Were we taking a break to enjoy life or stop the busyness?

Moreover, what is the first thing to go when we take a break?… chores, responsibilities… callings, Bible studies… serving others, prayer… ( I better stop, while I may have a couple of friends left, but you get the idea. You know it; I don’t have to say it.)

We usually don’t stop what we consider the fun things when we take a break… hobbies, holidays or traditions, all the things that revolve around “me.”

Now keep in mind, I am not telling you to be busy, busy, busy. Additionally, that does not mean you are to be miserable. As mentioned above in Ecclesiastes 9:7-9, we are to enjoy life – this life we were given, with those we love. There are things we do that maybe we enjoy that are not part of God’s will, that we may need to take a break from or stop altogether.

Jesus said it simply like this …

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 11:28-29

You see that?…Take.. An action word. Kind of the opposite of what we think of rest. Kind of the opposite of what we think of when we think of taking a break. When we think of taking a break, we think of stopping action.

Even Paul hints at a different kind of rest when he points out that their bodies did not have any rest here…

 For even when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn—fighting without and fear within.

2 Corinthians 7:5

 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Matthew 26:45

We are in a fight! The enemy would love nothing more than to see you take a break. One less person he has to worry about. He’s shouting it, and we don’t even recognize it! IT’S OKAY TAKE A BREAK and then he throws in the part that is if we didn’t fall for the break yet, he thinks will surely trap us…. you deserve it.

There is hope friends!

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Hebrews 4:12-13

God’s word… the thing we usually are first to push to the side…(Coincidence? I think not!) It is LIVING and ACTIVE…It discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart. IT is the Sword of the Spirit! Ephesians 6:17

The enemy is trying to disarm you…. Pick up your Sword and FIGHT!

Friends, there is a time to rest… JESUS will tell you when to rest. But that time may not be as long as you need or want. Look at Jesus with the disciples in Mark 6:30-44. There is a world that needs you… There is a world that is waiting for you to share the Light with them.

And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.  And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.

Mark 6:31-32

The disciples were busy… They didn’t even have time to eat! That would be absurd to most of us today.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.

Isaiah 55:8

God’s ways are not like our ways…Look at what He says to do when someone slaps us! I could give you countless examples throughout the Bible, but that is for another time.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:1-3

Friends sin CLINGS… it clings so closely.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

1 Peter 5:8-11

The coward that hides behind the mask and waits for you is ROARING…. Can you hear him?… I bet you can now! 🙂 RESIST him!

We will suffer for a little while but CHRIST WILL RESTORE US!! DO NOT FEAR!!!

So next time you think… It’s okay to take a break… Do one thing first…

The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Proverbs 20:5

Search your heart. Ask God to search your heart and show you why it is okay for you to take a break… Who is saying to you it’s okay take a break?

Okay, I guess do two things. Also…

As always friends,

Be Blessed!
