After writing yesterday, there is something I cannot shake, so what better way to do that than write about it.
The words Follow Me. In today’s
In today’s world, these words are so familiar. There are so many people, ideas, things people want us to follow, like, or share it is overwhelming at times! Sometimes it seems as if they are shouting it! Follow me! This way!
But friends, amidst of all this noise and requests for you to follow. There is One who is speaking to the darkness. There is One who is gently asking, there is one who, all along before the likes and the follow buttons, who said and still is saying, “Follow me.”
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
Man…”but”s. Not my favorite part in a sentence. Usually, following “but” is the heart, the main point of the sentence. I learned somewhere once that if you follow-up with a “but” you are saying, “scratch out what I just said; this is what I really mean.” I’m not sure that what I mean here but maybe… I digress
But following Jesus is not like we do today when we follow someone. We can’t just click like or share and consider ourselves following Jesus.
(I just need to call this out… What if those follow buttons are not just that way for any old reason, but another tactic by the coward that hides in the shadows to try to change the way we think of the words “follow me” ? I won’t bite not anymore… take that coward!)
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
It is hard to think about this request. It is truly dying to oneself. When reading about some of these times, we see two responses: those to turned away because the request was too great for them, or those that dropped everything!
And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
My heart’s response is like the scribe above, I will follow you wherever you go! Although I will admit it is much easier said than done. But though I may fail a 100x a day, I will repent, get back up, and carry my cross daily!
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Friends, let’s walk in the light of this world, carry our cross daily, and answer His call to follow Him!
