Have you ever found yourself in a middle of a theological debate? Sometimes, they turn into claims about things not mentioned in the Bible. Sometimes this happens based on personal revelations or convictions and sometimes this is because of reasoning and/or scientific understanding?
I used to like these things because one of my hearts desire is to know more about God/Jesus/the Holy Spirit/Heaven ect. However,
God dealt with me concerning these things. You see sometimes, I think we are not meant to know certain things, this is probably for our benefit but none the less we just don’t need to know it or understand it.
For the purpose of this note I will call them the secret things. Some examples of this are but not limited to, what happens the moment we die till we reach heaven, what is the age a child becomes accountable for their sins, how does God hear everyone’s prayers, what color was Jesus’ skin ( I know this is not necessarily a secret thing but has been a debate), when the world will end, ect.
The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law Deuteronomy 29:29
There are somethings we just don’t need to know they belong to God. You think we would have learned from Adam and Eve. The tree of knowledge contained things not meant for humans, it was for our benefit but we ruined that. We don’t have to know it all.
But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest. And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me. Mark 9: 34-37
I am so thankful that the 12 disciples were not perfect. I learn so much from their mistakes. The above scriptures show what tends to happen with Christians today. Not that they worry about being first but more about other religious topics.
These are the things you are to teach and insist on. If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain 1 Timothy 6:3-5
Search the scripture. If it is a personal conviction/revelation then double-check in prayer and don’t argue about it. I have seen it one man’s conviction is not always another man’s conviction. We are different people and the Lord knows what each of us require and delegates accordingly.
Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. 2 Timothy 2:14-17
Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.2 Timothy 2:23-26
But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned. Titus 3:9-11
I will admit I have taken part in some of these stupid arguments, whether is it by trying to reason it in my head and/or with other people. Moreover, I like documentaries that talk about history but I will warn you the some of the ones that talk about the Bible and/or Bible stories are just garbage. I totally understand what the scripture is talking about when it says the teaching will spread like gangrene. It messes with you and it leads you to doubt.
I think that is why it says to avoid those things. Don’t watch them to see what the other side says. That is the mistake I made. I wanted to know the arguments of the world so I could be prepared when up against the world.
Furthermore, if you see your Christian bother partaking in such nonsense we are told to warn them/gently instruct them. My advice would be to show them the scripture above.
