And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbade him, because he followeth not us.But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.For he that is not against us is on our part. For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. Mark 9:38-41
I don’t know what it is about us humans but we like to group/categorize things. We do this to many things including species, people, books, and religion. Why do we do this? To be able to tell differences and similarities more easy.
However, we tend to go one step further.
We judge, we say some are right and some are wrong, some are better and some are worse. The disciples did this in the verse above.
They thought a man casting out demons was wrong because he didn’t follow them. But Jesus set them straight. You cannot be for and against something at the same time. This is also seen in the Bible with the Pharisees, Jews, Gentiles, Samaritan, prostitutes, tax collector, and Just about everyone Jesus came in contact with.
Why do we still today try to say that certain denominations are the only way? Isn’t a christian a christian no matter what denomination? Look at a verse every Christian should know…
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
It says whoever believes, not if you believe and do this. If you just believe. That is not to say that it is all there is to being a Christian we have the Bible and the Holy Spirit to help us on our journey. As of late, I have been so frustrated with denominations that claiming to be the only way.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
If we must claim that there is only one way it is Jesus. Jesus is the only way. We as Christians have been so consumed who/what is more right we lose sight of why we are here! It reminds me of how the disciples fought over who is first or who should wash feet. They lost sight of the purpose, the reason why we are here.
My friends, I hope that you will evaluate if you or your church family has lost sight of why we are here. I hope that we as Christians, no matter the denomination, can come together to be united for the common goal of reaching the lost and shine some light to this dark world.
