Ok, so I heard a message in church a few weeks ago and really wanted to share a point that was made, about the Armor of God. As well as, dig a little deeper into that concept. Now I have read this story, a million times and I don’t think I have realized this, till now, and it is profound. First here is the scriptures….
The Whole Armor of God
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. Ephesians 6:10-20 NKJV
Well the pastor said something about this scripture that I never really thought about before; he pointed out that the Bible is very clear that The Armor of God is God’s Armor.
You see before I always thought that I had to try to be as truthful as possible, so that I could gird my waist with truth. Also, I would have to try really hard to be as righteous as possible, so I could have a breastplate of righteousness;that I would have to know all the gospel in and out to cover my feet.
Do you get the picture? .my_____ , my_____, my _____, everything is relying on me, and my fallible attempts to be covered. While some of those concepts can be found biblically elsewhere. This is GOD’s armor. It is infallible.
We are to put on His righteousness, His faith, His Spirit, His truth, Wow, that makes a huge difference. Being able to put all my trust in Him. That is definitely a relief, to put on His armor instead of mine, because I know that His armor is without our all my dents, weak spots and holes because He is perfect.
I don’t know why I had never realized that before. Afterall, it is written in plain English, “The Armor of God”. It doesn’t say the armor of you, me, Christians, whatever… it says God.
How many times do people, including ourselves, expect Christians to be perfect? The pressure sometimes can be unbearable. I have been guilty of placing this pressure on myself, as well.
Jesus was perfect and He is an example of how we are to live our lives. But God knew we would never measure up; never…..otherwise He would not have sent His Son.
What’s more, by hiding our flaws instead of sharing them with others we miss out on valuable friendships, prayers, and all that comes with being an open book. While I’m sure that some may judge you, others will walk with you, pray for you and love on you.
I think that just like in this Armor of God post, I am not alone in misunderstanding some of these truths that God has laid out for us. I think that many of us, as Christians, try to be what we think God wants us to be; but we miss the mark if we are doing it on our own. Everything we are and want to be cannot come from us; it can only…only come from God.
Additionally, most Christians know the verse….
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 KJV
All of the ‘requirements” Christians put on themselves are good, but not necessarily Biblical. It makes it seem like being a Christian is more work and bothersome ….This is NOT true. His burden is lite, More often what we place on ourselves is actually what we should be giving to God and using what He has given us.
My brothers and sisters of God, I urge you to think about these questions and rely on God to answer them for you.
- Do you find your walk as a Christian burdensome?
- Do you believe that His yoke is easy and the burden is lite?
- Are you relying more on yourself than you are on God?
- Have you been trying to put on your armor or God’s?
