Mistranslated!

Definition of Punishment….

  1.  suffering, pain, or loss that serves as retribution
  2. a penalty inflicted on an offender through judicial procedure
  3. severe, rough, or disastrous treatment

Definition of Discipline….

  1. training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character.

I heard sermon on parenting the other day and it got me thinking about our view of God as our father. They said that the word punish, in the King James Version, as well as, others is a mistranslation.

So I did some digging and guess what…. that is so true I looked up the word punish in my ISA Bible and randomly picked about 10 of the verses. I looked up the meaning of punish for the Hebrew or Greek Translation and the were all talking for the most part about discipline or instruction. Not one really meant to punish.

I think that is sooooo AWESOME!!!  Because, Jesus took all of the punishment for our sins, the pain , the penalty, the suffering. Our God loves us and only disciplines us. He disciplines us to hopefully prevent us from future mistakes, to mold us, to perfect us.

Ahh…. the beauty of seeing past mistranslations and finding true meaning!
